Understand currency pairs, quotes and what you actually trade.
Foreign exchange (Forex or FX) is the market for exchanging currencies. In EUR/USD, EUR is the base currency and USD is the quote currency. A quote of 1.0850 means one euro is priced at 1.0850 US dollars. Buying this pair expresses the view that the euro will strengthen relative to the dollar; selling expresses the opposite view. A correct direction is only part of a trade: size, costs and the exit determine the financial result.
Retail access often uses leveraged, over-the-counter products such as rolling spot FX or CFDs. The product you hold depends on the broker and account agreement. A CFD is a contract linked to price changes; it does not give you ownership of the underlying currency or physical metal. MT5 is the software interface, not the broker or a guarantee of execution.
XAUUSD commonly represents gold quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. It is not a currency pair in the usual sense. A broker may label it GOLD, XAUUSD.a or another name. Contract size, tick size, trading hours and financing can differ. Never assume that two similarly named symbols have identical terms.
The Bid is the quote used to sell and the Ask is the quote used to buy. Ask minus Bid is the spread. You buy at Ask and normally close a long at Bid; you sell at Bid and normally close a short at Ask. A new position may therefore show a loss immediately, even if the quote has barely moved. Commission and overnight financing may apply separately.
Many FX markets operate around the clock during the trading week, but weekends, holidays, session breaks and broker schedules matter. Economic releases, interest-rate expectations and liquidity affect prices and spreads. No session or news event guarantees a particular outcome.
On a demo account, find EURUSD and XAUUSD. Write down the Bid, Ask, spread and contract size for each. Identify which instrument is a currency pair.
Separate pips, points, ticks and money.
A pip is a conventional unit used to describe a change in an FX quote. For many currency pairs it is 0.0001; for many JPY pairs it is 0.01. EURUSD moving from 1.0850 to 1.0870 is a move of 20 pips. USDJPY moving from 150.20 to 150.35 is a move of 15 pips.
A fractional pip is often displayed as an extra decimal. On a five-decimal EURUSD quote, 1.08500 to 1.08501 is one point of 0.00001, or one tenth of a conventional pip. In MT5, “point” follows the symbol’s quote precision. Tick size is the minimum permitted price increment and can differ from a point. Read the symbol specification instead of inferring it from appearance.
People use “pip” inconsistently for gold. A move from 4366.00 to 4367.00 is unambiguously a USD 1.00 move per ounce. If a broker’s point is 0.01, that is 100 points. State exact price levels and price distance when copying gold ideas. Do not reuse an FX pip calculator without checking its gold settings.
For EURUSD, assuming 100,000 EUR per lot and a USD account, a 0.0001 change is approximately USD 10 per lot, or USD 0.10 at 0.01 lots. Other pairs and account currencies require conversion. For a linear gold CFD with 100 ounces per lot, 0.01 lots represents one ounce: a USD 8.00 adverse move is about USD 8 before fees. These are assumptions for teaching, not universal broker terms.
A general estimate is: price distance ÷ tick size × tick value per lot × lots, with tick value expressed in your account currency. Tick value may vary with price or conversion rates. Check your broker’s calculation and allow for commission, financing and slippage.
Calculate the price distance between 4366 and 4374. If the point is 0.01, convert that distance into points. Answer: 8.00 price units, or 800 points.
Choose exposure before thinking about targets.
Define a maximum planned loss for the idea before choosing lots. An illustrative exercise might allocate 0.5% of USD 2,000 equity, or USD 10. This is a calculation example, not a suitable risk level for every person. Set your own limits for a trade, a day and total open exposure. Use money you can afford to lose and practise without real capital first.
The distance between the intended entry and Stop Loss determines loss per lot. Position size follows from that distance and the symbol specification. Do not choose a familiar lot size first and move the stop simply to fit your budget.
Assume a USD account, 100 ounces per lot, Sell entry 4366 and SL 4374. The distance is USD 8 per ounce, so estimated movement loss is USD 800 per lot. A USD 10 budget gives 0.0125 lots before costs. With a 0.01 lot step, rounding down gives 0.01 lots and about USD 8 movement risk. Fees reduce the room within the budget. If the minimum allowed size exceeds your budget, skip the trade.
Leverage reduces the margin needed for exposure; it does not reduce the loss from a given price move. Margin is collateral, not a maximum loss. Low free margin can lead to forced liquidation under the broker’s rules. A stop can execute worse than requested during a gap or fast market.
Three tickets for one idea still share one total budget. Multiple gold positions, or positions with similar market drivers, can lose together. Include pending orders that could activate together. Do not increase size to recover a loss, average into a losing trade without a tested plan, or widen SL to avoid accepting a loss.
Reward-to-risk compares planned reward distance with risk distance before costs. A 2R target is not a promise of a 2R result. In a simplified fixed-outcome model, expectancy = win probability × average win − loss probability × average loss − average costs. Neither a high win rate nor an attractive target ratio alone establishes positive expectancy.
Write a demo risk budget. Calculate the combined exposure of three 0.01-lot gold positions with the same USD 8 stop distance and 100 ounces per lot: approximately USD 24 before costs.
Know what waits, what triggers and what may never fill.
A pending order asks the broker to act when a price condition is met. It is different from an open position. An accepted pending order may remain waiting, expire or be cancelled without any trade opening. If it triggers, execution still depends on the order type, liquidity and broker rules.
A Buy Limit is placed below the current Ask to seek a lower buying price. A Sell Limit is above the current Bid to seek a higher selling price. A Buy Stop is above the current Ask to enter after an upward threshold; a Sell Stop is below the current Bid to enter after a downward threshold. Broker minimum distances can restrict valid levels.
A limit instruction seeks its specified price or better, subject to the instrument’s execution rules, but a fill is not guaranteed. A stop activates a trading instruction once the trigger is reached; the fill can be worse than the trigger during a gap. “Stop” in Buy Stop or Sell Stop describes an entry type. Stop Loss describes a protective exit; these are different functions.
Buy Stop Limit and Sell Stop Limit are two-stage types that place a limit order after a stop condition. They are not substitutes for ordinary Stop orders. Leave them for later study if the idea does not explicitly require them.
Buy entries generally use Ask; Sell entries use Bid. Many OTC charts display Bid by default, so a candle alone may not explain activation. A long’s SL/TP normally triggers against Bid and a short’s against Ask. Exchange-traded instruments can follow other trigger rules. Check the quote side and product documentation.
GTC means Good Till Canceled, subject to the broker’s validity rules. Other options may include the current day or a specified date/time. Server time may differ from your local time. An old order can activate later if you forget it. Review every waiting order when the original idea expires or is cancelled.
With Bid 4360 and Ask 4360.30, classify buying at 4355 and selling at 4366. Answer: Buy Limit and Sell Limit, subject to permitted distances.
Find the right account, symbol, order and position.
MetaTrader 5 connects you to a broker’s trading server. Confirm the account number, server and demo/live status before entering anything. An investor or read-only login may let you view an account without trading. MT5 itself does not define your broker’s fees, product terms or investor protections.
On mobile, Quotes lists instruments and live Bid/Ask quotes; Chart shows price history; Trade shows positions, pending orders and account figures; History records past activity. Desktop uses Market Watch, charts, Navigator and the Toolbox tabs. Labels and locations vary between iPhone, Android, desktop versions and broker configurations.
Find XAUUSD or the broker’s gold symbol. Open its properties/specification: on desktop, right-click it in Market Watch and select Specification. On mobile, look for symbol details/properties in its menu. Check contract size, tick size/value, minimum lots, volume step, stops level, sessions and swap. Confirm that prices and product description match the idea’s intended instrument.
Balance reflects booked account activity. Equity includes floating results and other broker adjustments. Margin is collateral in use; free margin is the remaining available amount under the account rules. Margin level is generally equity ÷ margin × 100% when margin is positive. Stop-out thresholds are broker-specific. A comfortable margin level does not replace a loss limit.
A hedging account can hold separate positions in the same symbol. On a netting account, trades in that symbol combine into one net position; an opposite deal can reduce, close or reverse it. This affects splitting targets and closing trades. Identify the account model on demo before using multi-ticket workflows.
An order is an instruction, a deal is an execution, and a position is the resulting exposure. After submitting, inspect Trade and History for acceptance, execution, rejection or cancellation. If the response is delayed, check first instead of submitting a duplicate. Keep one-click trading off while learning so you have a review step.
Locate your demo account number, server and account model. Open one symbol’s specification and find the minimum volume and step. Do not place a live order.
Build an exit plan around the actual entry.
Entry is the actual executed opening price. An entry zone is a range for evaluating a setup, not a promise that every price gives the same risk or target ratio. A market fill can differ from the quote you saw, and a pending stop can fill beyond its trigger. Recalculate exposure using your actual fill.
For a new buy, a protective SL normally sits below entry and TP above it. For a new sell, the arrangement is reversed. These are price levels, not monetary amounts. MT5 versions may allow SL/TP entry in price, points or money: check the selected unit before copying a number. A zero SL field commonly means no attached SL.
At entry 4366, SL 4374 is 8 price units away. TP1 4358 is 8 units away, so its gross planned reward-to-risk is 1:1. TP2 4353 gives 13 ÷ 8 = 1.625R; TP3 4348 gives 18 ÷ 8 = 2.25R. Costs, partial exits and execution affect the realised result.
Entering the same zone at 4363 with SL 4374 creates 11 units of risk and only 5 units to TP1. At 4369, the distances are 5 and 11. Do not treat the whole zone as one fixed ratio or copy someone else’s lot size.
Moving SL to the entry price aims to reduce remaining price risk. It does not guarantee a zero net result: commission, financing and execution can produce a loss. It may also cause an earlier exit before the original target. Use a pre-defined management rule rather than moving SL impulsively.
Attached SL and TP are normally held on the broker’s server once accepted. A desktop trailing stop is platform-side and needs the platform running and connected to keep adjusting; the last accepted server-side SL remains. No stop is a guaranteed fill price. After any modification, verify the accepted level in Trade.
For a buy at 4311 with SL 4305 and TP 4318, calculate risk distance and gross reward-to-risk. Answer: 6 units and 7/6 ≈ 1.17R.
Read an idea, choose an order and manage the result on demo.
Translate a message into clear parameters.
A trade idea is a possible scenario for your own evaluation. It is not an order already placed on your account, and it is not a guarantee. Manual copying means choosing and entering each parameter yourself. This academy does not connect to MT5, Telegram or an automatic signal service.
Sell zone 4363–4369
SL 4374
TP1 4358 · TP2 4353 · TP3 4348
GOLD SELL gives the instrument and direction. The zone is a potential entry area. SL is the planned protective exit; the targets describe potential exits if price falls. The message does not supply a universally appropriate lot size or guarantee a single mandatory entry within the zone.
Read the timestamp and subsequent messages. Has the provider cancelled the idea, moved SL, reported a target or ended the setup? Confirm the stated timezone where relevant. A historical price example or a screenshot is not a fresh opportunity. If validity is unclear, pause and ask for clarification instead of inventing missing parameters.
Compare the current Bid/Ask with the zone. If price has already passed TP1 or moved away, do not chase by keeping stale targets and widening risk. Check trading hours, scheduled news and spreads. Execution at a different time or broker can produce a different result from the original idea.
Record the exact broker symbol, direction, chosen entry, order type, volume, SL, chosen TP/partial-exit method, expiry and cancellation rule. Decide the total budget across all entries in the zone. If several entries are allowed in your plan, they must share that budget. No requirement to trade follows from receiving a message.
Copy the training example into a note with separate fields. Add the two missing decisions: your risk-sized volume and the order type based on the current quote.
Match the idea to the quote you have now.
For the training sell zone 4363–4369, assume Bid 4360 and Ask 4360.30. A plan to sell at 4366 if price rises into the zone uses Sell Limit. It waits above current Bid. If Bid is already inside the zone, a market sell requests immediate execution at an available price, but only if your plan still permits a new entry.
If Bid is already above 4366, a Sell Limit at 4366 is on the wrong side of the quote. A Sell Stop below current Bid is a different setup, entering after a downward threshold. Do not mechanically switch types simply to make MT5 accept an old level. Reassess validity and the logic first.
For a fictional buy zone 4310–4312 with current Ask 4320.30, a Buy Limit at 4311 waits for a pullback. With entry 4311, SL 4305 is below it and TP1 4318 is above it. A Buy Stop above current Ask instead follows an upward threshold. Direction alone cannot determine which entry type is right.
| Intended entry | Standard type | Quote comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Buy lower | Buy Limit | Below Ask |
| Sell higher | Sell Limit | Above Bid |
| Buy after rising | Buy Stop | Above Ask |
| Sell after falling | Sell Stop | Below Bid |
Minimum placement distances, supported types and market sessions are broker-specific. Stop-limit orders have separate mechanics. Price touching a chart line alone is not proof of a valid trigger or fill. Inspect the actual quote side and order status.
On paper only, assume Bid 4360 / Ask 4360.30. Classify a buy trigger at 4366 and a sell trigger at 4355: Buy Stop and Sell Stop.
A careful manual order, from account check to confirmation.
The following is a workflow illustration using the sell example from lesson 7. The assumed current Bid is 4360. Real markets may be anywhere else. Do not submit these historical levels to a live account. Layouts and button names differ by device and version.
The schematic below shows the fields to recognise. It cannot send an order. If your app has a compact chart trading panel, the same values may appear in different places. Check the selected units and any linked SL/TP ratio settings.
Invalid price: check order type, quote side, precision and minimum distance. Invalid stops: check SL/TP direction and permitted distance. Invalid volume: check minimum and step. Not enough money: review available margin and exposure. Market closed: inspect sessions. Do not remove protection or increase leverage just to bypass a rejection. Before retrying, inspect Trade and History to avoid duplicates.
On demo, open the order form and fill a hypothetical order valid for the current quote. Review it without submitting first. Then practise placing and cancelling a small permitted pending order; record the accepted status.
Plan multiple targets without multiplying your risk.
A standard MT5 position has one Take Profit level. When it executes, it closes the remaining position volume. Typing TP1 does not configure TP2 and TP3. Choose your method before entry and confirm it works with the broker’s volume rules and account model.
One position, one target: attach TP1 and close all volume there. Later targets are then reference levels, not further automatic exits for that position.
One position, manual partial exits: attach your chosen final TP and close part of the volume at earlier targets, if your plan calls for it. This requires monitoring and valid volume increments. An alert is a reminder, not an order. Do not assume an unattended partial exit will happen.
Separate positions on a hedging account: split the total allowed volume into tickets with different TPs and the planned protection. On a netting account, same-symbol trades combine; separate entries do not preserve independent attached target levels.
If the risk plan permits 0.03 lots total, splitting it into 0.01 + 0.01 + 0.01 keeps total volume at 0.03, assuming these sizes are permitted. Three tickets of 0.03 are 0.09 lots. Splitting a 0.01 position into three equal pieces is impossible if minimum size/step is 0.01. Use a simpler exit plan or skip; do not increase size just to create three targets.
On a hedging account, select the correct position in Trade → Close Position, enter the amount to close and review the closing action. A 0.03 position reduced by 0.01 leaves 0.02. On netting accounts, an opposite deal reduces net exposure, but an oversized opposite order can reverse it. Use the appropriate close workflow and verify the remaining volume and protection.
If your pre-defined rule calls for SL to move after TP1, modify it yourself and check acceptance. A group update does not move your stop. Partial profits do not remove risk on the remaining position, and entry-price SL is not a guaranteed net break even.
Write an exit plan for a hypothetical 0.03-lot total position. State which volume closes at each target, the remaining volume after TP1, and the account model required.
Keep your account aligned with your own plan.
Manual copying requires manual management. “Cancel”, “move SL”, “TP1 hit” or “close” in a group does not change your account. Identify the relevant idea, symbol and ticket, then inspect its current state before acting. Another trader’s fill can differ from yours.
| Your situation | Typical action |
|---|---|
| Pending order still waiting | Select it in Trade → Modify or Delete. |
| Open position needs new SL/TP | Select position → Modify Position; save and verify. |
| Open exposure should end | Use Close Position and verify the result. |
| Need a different pending volume | Typically cancel and recreate after confirming cancellation; recheck exposure. |
Deleting a waiting order does not close an already-open position. A request to cancel may race with activation: inspect Trade and History after the request. In a confirmation dialog, “Cancel” can mean dismiss the dialog and keep the order; “Delete” confirms removal. Read the action rather than relying on a familiar button location.
Broker stop and freeze levels can restrict edits near the current market. A rejected modification leaves the old levels in place; check the accepted values. Do not widen risk automatically when an update proposes a different SL. Recalculate the loss and decide whether the change fits your plan.
For a connection error, inspect server connection, current account and History before retrying. Accepted server-side SL/TP normally continue to operate when the app is closed, but manual partial exits and platform-side trailing behaviour depend on your setup. Never assume a failed submission created protection.
Record idea timestamp, your execution time, symbol, ticket, actual fill, size, SL, target plan, costs, changes and reason for exit. Separate rule-following from profit or loss: a profitable rule violation is still a process problem. Review a meaningful sample rather than changing rules after every trade.
On demo, practise modifying an accepted waiting order, cancelling it and confirming its removal. Then locate the record in History. Check that no unintended position remains.
Bring the whole process together before using real capital.
Receiving an idea is a prompt to evaluate, not an obligation to enter. Work through the checklist below on demo. Each item refers to the current account and market, not the values visible in someone else’s screenshot.
You should be able to explain why the order type fits, calculate the total risk, recognise an unfilled order, verify accepted protection, and react correctly to cancellation.
